Residential Options
"Towering" seven stories above Fayetteville Street this building was North Carolina's first skyscraper, built in 1907. The "Alexander Building," as it was known in the 1950's, was originally built as the Masonic Temple is now home to a number of professional offices as well as the NCSU College of Design's Fish Market Art Gallery, which is located in the basement. The first floor is occupied by the Raleigh Urban Design Center where many current downtown projects are on display. This historic landmark, designed by South Carolina architect, Charles McMillan, is the state's oldest surviving steel-reinforced concrete building. Back to Top 2. Raleigh Times Building This beautifully restored building exhibits some of the most intricate masonry work that can be found in Raleigh. Originally home to the Evening Times, the forerunner to the Raleigh Times newspaper, the building was purchased by Empire Properties in 2002. Restoration was recently completed with the help of the Historic Tax Credit Program and photographs that date from 1910. A top-notch example of mixed-use architecture, residential space is located on the second floor, and the first floor now features the Raleigh Times Bar,one of the newest additions to the Raleigh downtown scene. Stop on by for a cold one. Back to Top 3. The Hudson The Hudson Belk building was a hub of commerce in downtown Raleigh for seven decades before closing in 1995. Now known as the "Hudson," the building has been renovated to capture the exterior style and grace it exuded in the 1930's. The building now houses 66 extraordinary one, two, and three-bedroom flats. This excellent example of a mixed-use renovation houses ABC 11 television studios on the first floor, and is the future home to Yancy's Jazz and Blues Café. Back to Top 4. The Prairie Building The Prairie Building on Wilmington Street is one of Raleigh's oldest and most significant historic landmarks. It was designed in the 1870's by the prominent local architect, Joseph Prairie, and features the high ceilings and wood floors that were common to that era. The building has been transformed into an 11-unit apartment building by the Downtown Housing Improvement Corporation, a non-profit housing development company. The Prarie is a great example of adaptive re-use architecture for downtown. Occupancy at Prairie is restricted to households with incomes of less than 60% median area income. Back to Top 5. Capital Apartments The five-story Capital Apartments was Raleigh's first true apartment building. Composed in the Beaux-Arts style, it was constructed in 1917. This Raleigh Historic landmark consists of 35 one- and two-bedroom rental units with spacious floor plans featuring balconies, hardwood floors, and 10' 4" ceilings. 7. Victorian-Style House This home was custom built in 2006 by the Prado Construction Company in the Oakwood Historic District. The home features many of the Victorian-era design elements prominent in Oakwood. This four-bedroom features Victorian interior molding, and 10' foot ceilings on the first floor with 9' ceilings on the second floor. Thirty-seven windows create a spacious and airy floor plan. There is also a large front porch and a detached 2 1/2 car garage with above-ground storage. Back to Top 8. Founders Row These beautiful townhouse-style condominiums are unique in downtown Raleigh for their Syrian arches, skylights, and 12-foot elliptical windows. This pioneering downtown residential development also features brick courtyards and fountains. Located adjacent to City Market, Founder's Row is downtown living at its finest. Back to Top 9. Person Pointe Designed as multi-family housing, Person Pointe it is located at the corner of Cabarrus and Person Streets, just south of the city center. It features oak and cherry cabinets, hardwood flooring, ceramic tile, intricate millwork, gated parking and a buzz-in home security system. Person Point received a Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Community Appearance. Back to Top 10. Bloodworth Street Homes These homes are an example of Raleigh's community development program for moderate income homeowners. The homes were custom built to allow owners to add their own ideas to the design. The house offers views of downtown from the front porch, living room, and master bedroom. The first floor features bamboo flooring, an ecologically sensitive alternative to traditional flooring. Back to Top 11. Park Devereux The Park Devereux building introduced the warehouse-style condominium to downtown Raleigh's warehouse district. The all-brick construction houses 46 condominiums including multilevel lofts and single level flats. Interior ceiling heights range from 10' to 20' and units overlook one of the most beautifully landscaped parks in all of downtown Raleigh. See Nash Square again for the first time. Back to Top 12. The Dawson The Dawson is the most recent addition to downtown Raleigh's burgeoning warehouse district, featuring 66 residential units that range from 800 to 3,000 square feet in one-, two-three-, or four-bedroom configurations. Condominium interiors feature 10' ceilings. The Dawson on Morgan features all of the amenities of luxury living in downtown and features a great central location for taking in all of Raleigh's downtown spots. The Borough Restaurant and Bar is now open the ground floor, and will be open for the tour. Back to Top 13. 610 Hillsborough This great example of mixed-use architecture (shops on the ground floor, residential above) is located at the corner of Glenwood Avenue and Hillsborough Street. This building was remodeled and converted from apartments to condos in 2003. It houses 20 condominiums that enjoy a great central location. An additional unit is currently being offered as rental, but it won't last long. Back to Top 14. St. Mary's Townhomes The 48 brick townhomes that comprise St. Mary's are situated in a serene enclave that features beautiful trees and brick walkways. These townhouses were custom built according to buyer specifications and include such amenities as hardwood flooring, ceramic tile, and home security systems. The project scope also includes site amenities such as privacy fencing, landscaping, and off-street parking. Back to Top 15. 222 Glenwood Avenue (Future
Construction) This project is being developed by Tramell Crow, the first national developer to propose new housing in downtown Raleigh. The project is located at the site of the Warren Distributing Company, just north of the 518 restaurant on Glenwood Avenue. The development will have 22,000 square feet of retail in the form of shops or restaurants. The building will include 117 residential units and a 360-space parking deck. Construction has already begun on the seven-story mid-rise. A full-scale model unit will be on view during the tour across from the construction site. Back to Top 16. The Cotton Mill Originally constructed in the late 1800's and used for 100 years as the loading portal for the rail freight lines on the building's east side, the Cotton Mill was renovated and modernized in 1996. The building houses 50 luxury condominiums ranging from 800 to 2500 square feet. The building is a Raleigh Historic Landmark and features exposed beams, hardwood floors, 10' windows and, in some units, 19' ceilings. The building is accessed from Capital Boulevard. Parking is out front. Back to Top 17. The Village at Pilot Mill This Village at Pilot Mill revives a by-gone era of compact towns and villages. The houses are built almost to the sidewalk and alleyways provide access to detached garages. Inspired by the New Urbanist movement, the Village at Pilot Mill presents cutting edge neighborhood design. Back to Top FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS A. Bloomsbury Estates Bloomsbury Estates will be constructed in the Second Empire architectural style, one of the many rich historical styles that have precedent in downtown Raleigh. This style is characterized by its distinctive roof line. The Bloomsbury will actually be composed of two six-story buildings, and will include 94 luxury condominiums. Back to Top B. The Glen on Peace Another mixed-use development to be located in the bustling Glenwood South area is The Glen on Peace. This building will occupy the site just north of the Paramount. It will be a 4-story residential development that will include 2500 square feet of ground floor retail and feature 18 luxury condominium units. Back to Top C. RBC Centura Building/Dominion
Partners This building will house the US Corporate Headquarters of RBC Centura Bank. It will be prominently sited at the corner of Fayetteville and Martin Streets, across from the Mecca Restaurant. This development features 710,000 square feet of mixed-use space. It will be 31 stories in height and feature ground floor retail, 10 levels of office, an amenity and transfer floor, and 10 levels of condominiums. The 140 units of residential space is being developed by Dominion Partners and will have the best views of the city. The project breaks ground next year, and be completed in 2008. Back to Top D. Boylan Flats An eight-story residential mid-rise to be located directly across the street from the Paramount. It will feature 14 units and 800 feet of ground floor retail. This will be Raleigh's first green residential project in downtown. They will seek LEED certification, which is a national green-building rating system. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design system seeks to create high-performance, sustainable buildings. Back to Top E. The Lafayette The Lafayette is Empire Properties' proposal for site four in downtown Raleigh. It will be a signature building for downtown, helping to define the city's southern skyline. It will be filled with special amenities that currently don't exist in Raleigh: a signature restaurant with a nationally recognized chef, a boutique hotel, bar, luxury condominiums overlooking Memorial Auditorium, open areas for outside dining and a rooftop bar and swimming pool. Collaboration Empire Properties' public/private partnership with Wake County is the newest of Raleigh's mixed-use retail and condominium developments. The mixed-use project includes over 8,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and 44 mid-market priced one and two bedroom condominium units. The innovative design hides an 832 space parking deck from street view, creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment on the street. The project is located in the heart of downtown in the vibrant convention center district. Back to Top
